Throughout February, Endeavor has been learning about the Fruit of the Spirit. Our students have already learned about love and joy from the Spirit and will spend the next weeks learning about peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Our focus has been on the Holy Spirit, why gifts come from the Holy Spirit , details about each gift and why they are so good.
In the week about love, students learned that love is beyond an emotion or a thing. We say “I love the thrill of a roller-coaster” or “I love coffee” but that is not the love that is the gift. We have spent a lot of time unpacking the Biblical basis of love. Using examples of love described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, 13 the students have discovered that love is so much more than how you feel right now or how coffee or a roller-coaster make you feel when you enjoy them.
In the week about joy, students focused on the differences between joy and happiness. (The trend between the gift from God versus the fleeing emotion continues!) Students learned that Joy is based on what God does for us, can only come from God, and is God-centered, while happiness is based on what you can do for yourself, is temporary and fades quickly and is you-centered. We also focused on how God’s joy helps us through difficult times and in turn makes us stronger (James 1:2-3).
Through March and April, we will continue to explore the Fruit of the Spirit, our students will be challenged and pushed outside of their comfort zone to look at how these Fruits can be life-changing.
